This looks great! I can't wait to see/read more, especially about artistic gymnastics, I absolutely adore this sport.
Thanks zarinaballerina! I didn't know you liked artistic gymnastics! (Next post: favorite gymnastics routines-mostly from around 1989)
I'm a fan of artisitc gymnastics since I first saw Lavinia Milosovici in 95, I don't know much about this sport before that. I also love rhytmic gymnastics.

I actually became a fan 6 months ago, but got really interested in old gymnastics videos through some blogs

I really like your blog, it looks great to me. But since you're asking, I LOVE Aliya Mustafina, so I wouldn't mind if there will be more stuff about her in the future. Nor would I mind me some Romanians.
I still can't believe Aliya blew up her knee a year or so before Oly's, if she hadn't she would have left everyone in the dust in AA. It would be Gabby who?

Thanks! I love Aliya too, her 2010 state was amazing! As for Romania, I'm not a fan of their current work (sans Pitic and Izbasa) but I loved Aurelia Dobre, Camilea Voinea, and Lavinia Milosovici.

What do you think of this post? (My ideal Romanian gymnastics team)
Love it!!! And I like how you've included Raluca (Pitic), she was so adorable as a kid in that Deva documentary. Will you include any romanian gymnasts from 1999-2012 squad? Hint: Raducan Andreea I love her, I still can't believe how could've doctor made that kind of mistake in Sydney Oly's. Though belu has his own version of what happened...
Do you guys know any good gymnastics forums? I used to be a member of gymworld (wasn't posting much), but that one seems to have dissapeared.

If I did a team using only gymnasts from 1999-now, my team would be Pitic, Oana Ban, Andreea Raducan (I love her too), Monica Rosu, and Sandra Izbasa.
As for gymnastics message boards, I don't know any good ones (sorry)

Love it!! I'd include Catalina Ponor to the team. She's a superwoman. Does the Romanian team have a good bar worker now? The bar is really their weakest element and it's been keeping them from the gold medal for a long time. I don't follow gymnastics forum but I read rewritingrussiangymnastics occasionally. That blogger has a wealth of information about Russian gymnastics from the past til now.
So sad to see this happening to the gymnastics powerhouse. I also read on wikipedia that the Romanian team were tested after the Olympics and those who couldn't keep up with the new demands were sifted and Diana Chelaru retired as a result
And I read on the Couch Gymnast that Anna Pavlova is going to change nation. Yay

Thanks pearlyriver!!!
I read the article a while ago, and it seems like Romania's senior team is really depleted They're only bring Iordache and Bulimar to Euros and the only other gymnasts I've seen competing internationally are juniors...
Cata would be my sixth addition to the team, I love her beam and floor!
pearlyriver and zarina, what would be your dream team? (for Romania or anywhere else, I'm planning on doing a blogpost for USA/Russia/USSR/China/non-top 4 teams later)

I agree with your picks, except that I'd replace Oana with Cata in floors. Cata could have been an all rounder if she wanted to. I-spiralmao, I want to ask your opinion of Phan Thi Ha Thanh, the Vietnamese gymnast who won bronze in vault at 2011 World Championship. I don't know where else to ask because I'm still not familiar with a plethora of skills in gymnastics. What do you think of her form? Judging from her performance at Doha Challenge Cup a few weeks ago, she's cleaned up her form a lot. Her current form is even better than her 2011 form, although her Rudy still looks very messy. Another World medal may be too much to ask, but she's doing well at the age when most gymnasts think of retirement. I used to think that her bronze was a fluke, but she proved me wrong.

Oh this is really tough. I love, Andreea Raducan, Oana Ban, Andreea Munteanu (too bad she injured herself only few weeks before Athens 2004), Daniela Sofronie , Steliana Nistor (how she managed to comete in Beijing is still a mistery to me, she was so badly taped up, I'm surprised she was able to stand up, let alone do all those tricks), Sandra is great as well and I love, love Iordache.

I-spiralmao you have a great team there.
I forgot about Steliana Nistor. Just realized that she's only 23 years old now. She retired too young. She was the most memorable Romanian gymnastics at Beijing IMO, but she was kinda overshadowed by the previous generations. All the Romanian squad at 2004 were excellent and had a great time there. But no one beats Cata in my book. How she managed to regain her top form after 5 years off gymnastics is still a mystery to me. I always have a soft spot for the veterans who have the guts to defy the norm in gymnastics. It's hard to stay in gymnastics beyond 20, let alone competing at Olympics at 25.

The dream teams are based entirely on personal opinion and I like Oana's floor better than Cata's, so....
As for Phan, I do agree her bronze was kind of a fluke, however it is nice to see gymnasts outside of the usual countries win medals. As for her vaults, her DTY is pretty but looks a little underrotated on the replay, and her rudi is a bit It looks really piked and her landing was scary.
Thanks for introducing me to amazing Soviet gymnasts. I know none of them. Oksana Omelianchik's floor is to die for, and Maria Filatova's is as close to ballet as it can get. Can't believe Omelianchik didn't get to compete at any Olympics.I feel that today the word "ballerina" is tossed around too frequently in gymnastics commentary. I heard Christine of BBC call Aliya and Afan's floors ballerina-styled. They are certainly beautiful, but they're not ballerina IMO.
Also thank you for broadening my interest in gymnastics. My most favorite apparatuses are beam and bars. I love seeing beautiful lines, extension and elegance. I also watched vault because it's straightforward and easy to understand, but it's too athletic for me. Previously, I wasn't interested in floor routine. I watched current floor routines and wondered why they bothered with music at all. It all seemed like tricks after tricks to me. I don't know floor routines can be so artistic, expressive yet still powerful. Can't imagine how many talented Soviet gymnasts were left out of important international events due to the depth of the Soviet team.
I'm only familiar with gymnasts from 2000 onwards. Are you going to do a strictly Russian dream team?
