That 2007-2008 white dress goes so well with Mao. She looks sublime in that. Best dress ever! I love this dress too but according to some dispatch, this is not really Mao's costume. It is Mai's costume and Mao borrowed it from her sister for National 2007 and it was the only time she wore this after that she wore her own sky blue dress for SP.

He's Tatsuya Ishii. He was a lead vocal of a Japanese pop rock band, Kome Kome Club. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatsuya_Ishii

It's very condescending, he needs to realize that this was a nationals competition. In no way in an international competition would Akiko and Kanako score that high. The placements may be right this time, but the score difference wouldn't be there. Also, Jack Gallagher needs to stop thinking of YK as this flawless individual ugh. Mao didn't just screw up on the 3A's this time, she also screwed up on the loops. I think he forgot that at the GPF, she still scored 200+ with two botched 3A's (despite the first one being ratified).

I wish both of them would shut up and stop worshiping Yuna. God I hope Mao will have the skate of her life in Sochi, and will silence the likes of these two, once and for all.

Interesting that Mao is getting more attention from international news media now that the Olympics are coming up soon.
ETA: Oh, I see now that roma beat me to it This is really such a beautiful article. Mao has gone through a lot in 23 years, and I think I can say the same for many of us as well. Life is certainly not smooth sailing. Even though the waters appear still and the boat so stable, little do we see the strong currents beneath and the tough steering and mechanics to keep the ship balanced. After watching a few programmes from Russians pairs and dancers, I really appreciate all that Mao has been through - the difficult style change in 2008, the technical difficulties in 2010, life's difficulties and challenges and finding purpose in skating in the post olympics.... It really shows how reality can be harsh and even the strongest feel tired and quitting at times! How devasted Mao must have been when her mother passed away! I think the last part is so poignant. Lori said “She will still know that she can have happiness after sadness, that life is ever-changing and that she is strong enough to handle it. That is something important to know as you grow up.” And I think that is one thing that we can relate to. Life is bound to have ups and downs, and we can never get over it nor will we ever get used to it. But it's building the strength to face these challenges and learning the find that piece of joy through it all. So one of the reasons why I love watching Mao, not just because of her skating, but her back story. Most of it is private (and should remain as such!), but what is shared, shows the spirit of one girl amidst adversities, and how she is a deserving champion in her own right.

Sweetdreams, your prose are so beautiful. Aren't you an English or Lit major? Thanks for speaking up every thing I want to say about how Mao has inspired me. Since following Mao, I came to appreciate hard work more and more. I no longer believe much in lucky charms (although they still matter a bit), I only believe in hard work. I think Mao is quintessential Japanese in that she never gives up, never make excuse and keep looking forward and working hard to become a better version of herself. On the other hand, she's surprisingly down-to-earth and humble for someone who's achieved so much at such a young age. I never think these contrasting characteristics can exist in one person.
