| Was wondering which music I'd like Mao to perform to, and here are some of my suggestions (or just pure fans' fantasies)... I don't know many classic numbers, but I would like to see her skating to Rachmaninoffs' Piano Concerto No.2 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8l37utZxMQ), though I know some people are going to say it's too dark again. But Fumie Suguri and Dai skated to it before, so it should be more acceptable than 'Bells...'. Besides that, I think Mao has achieved the level of artistry to be able to express the depth in this piece. I think this would able Mao to show both her soft and strong types of artistry. I'd looove to see her do some Ennio Morricone film music. Not 'Cinema Paradiso' cause it's become too popular, but something like the 1.Yo-Yo Ma version of 'The Legend of 1900' theme( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qcFzZrhkWY), since I think Mao can well express cello sounds as well as piano and violin by now. And also 2.a medley of the score for 'Malena'( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOGjWytqpUQ) would be great. The main theme itself is beautiful, but there are other dramatic pieces in the soundtrack which would be great for step sequences. 3.'Once upon a time in America' theme also Yo-Yo Ma version( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQCGvfBc-oI). 4.Gabriels' Oboe from 'The Mission' Yo-Yo Ma version( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jSotUeV0WI) This one might sound a little strange, but the theme from 'Nokto de la Galaksia Fervojo' by Haruomi Hosono( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OFLJ23E_As). It'll be totally something new for Mao I guess, but with the proper choreography, it might make a good program for exhibitions and shows. The sense of non-gravity which I think this music has may match Maos' light fluid skating style. Although I do want Mao to get more softness back, if she should try something strong like 'Bells...' again, I'd like her to use this ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7eCMHWiCM4). It's the main theme song from Lars von Triers' film called 'Europa'.....which is a dark gloomy film I wouldn't recommend that much, but this theme song has some extremely beautiful soft parts in the latter half which is enhanced by the dark first half. I also wish Mao would someday skate to the theme for the Japanese film titled 'Suna no Utsuwa (Vessel of Sand)'. Since the main character in the film is a composer and pianist, they actually had a whole symphony written just for the film and it's brilliant. The symphony itself is titled 'Destiny'(Part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0rPP-83KMc / Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX0YRapibRg) and it's quite long so it needs to be edited into a medley. It has a sad tone throughout it, cause the story of the film is tragic, but overall I think it's beautiful and dramatic. Also, it has some melody lines which I think only a Japanese composer can create. I'd love to see Mao skating to music from he own country sometime. Last of all, Michael Nymans' 'The Heart Asks Pleasure First'( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dPS-EHl-FE) or 'Big My Secret'( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N02RMJlA_E) from Jane Campions' acclaimed film 'The Piano'. I think if Mao skated to either these pieces, it would probably be considered as her mature version of 'Nocturne'. I think of all the stuff I've listed here, I'd like to see Mao skate to these the most. If it were four years ago, I would have only listed some of Moriccones' film music. But my fantasies of Mao skating to all sorts of music keeps growing and growing, thanks to her 'Bells...' program which I think was more than enough to prove she's capable of handling various types of music compared to before she joined Tat. Mao is a challenger not just because she jumps 3As, but because she had the courage to do something different in music as well. As much as I loved her choices in music when she was younger, I'd still like her to try new types of music in the future too. No skater can broaden their artistry, if they only stick to the same types of music all the time. Thanks for reading such a long post. I hope some of you guys would share your selections of music for Mao in the future. And you never know who's reading this forum, so maybe we can influence Maos' future choreographers a bit if we're lucky! | |

| Well I've been hoping for Liebestraum for some time already and I'd still love to see her do it! And I also have this dream which is unfortunately very unlikely to come true, but I want Mao to skate to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir9797qNVk0 Beethoven's 6th (Pastoral) symphony 5th movement. You can also find a better version here: http://www.uniquetracks.com/beethoven-symphonies-vol.-3.html ,scroll down to the very last track. It's so beautiful, would suit her perfectly imho and I think it's actually very skateable if they cut it well. I've also never seen anyone skate to it so it would be really original too. Well, I can dream... | |

Me too! Her 'another' LP for this season was Liebestraum, so I hope she would show us it next season - Quote :

I like this too but I've not thought it for her programmes...but yes, it would be original and suit to her - PochinkoPotanko wrote:

I like his music too! I perfer 'Malena' and 'The Mission' to others, but his beautiful melodies suit to Mao so much. 'Cinema Paradiso' is too popular, but I want to see Mao skates to it once I still want Mao to skate to ballet music like many other Mao fans( including Batsuchan ). 'Black Swan par de duex' from 'Swan Lake'( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CztUJvmQX0), or Kitri part from 'Don Quixote'( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deykFj5i-pQ&feature=related) Except for ballet music, I want to see her skate to 'Traviata' (Love Stephan's LP ), or 'Atsuhime Opening'. There is a lovely montage with Mao which YT user yosshy88 made. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joJqL4b5Ieg)

| Mingming, I love the theme from "Atsuhime" and I can definitely picture Mao as a princess. Personally, I would love Mao to skate to "Libertango" (I have mentioned this before^_^) or Debussy's "L'Isle Joyeuse" Here's a link to this Debussy's piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcuW9b0zwo4 It's such an intriguing piece because it has different moods. It reminds me of the unpredictable nature of tidal waves. | |

| "Atsuhime" is good but there is no rapid music for Step Sequences so it's hard to be perform or they have to mix some War track in the Movie to this to make it possible for SP. But it is still nice for EX. | |

I think Debussy's music is so perfect for Mao! The softness of Impressionism matches Mao's style so well. I would really like to see Mao skate to 'The Girl with the Flaxen Hair', also by Debussy. Here's a video of Joshua Bell performing this piece with orchestra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4XgxduIv_0Another piece I would like to see Mao skate to - Chopin's Nocturne in C Sharp Minor. Again, as performed by the talented Joshua Bell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8s5aV60yFAAnd here, Midori Goto performs it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHex-NcqX6cMidori's playing is so beautiful. One really does find oneself moved to tears by her performances.

Agree Debussy also composed the haunting "La Mer". It is a very long piece; however, I like the 2nd movement best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHnM3RSZyKo I also loved Debussy's Children Corner's pieces. The compositons are so charming and lyrical (perfect for Mao ) Here is one of my favorites "The Snow is Dancing" performed by the great Michelangeli https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fniPt86r-BY&feature=related

YES! YES! I know this is slightly overused, but Mao skating to this program would take it to another level. To me this piece is not as heavy as prelude in C sharp minor. It's sometimes very light and more fluent. It would simply be perfect for Mao <3 Also totally agree on the Cello comment. I so want her to skate to 'the mission' to the version of Yo-Yo Ma. this is the most gorgeous piece of music and she would do it beautifully <3 @polosatik Haha, I love your suggestion! I love Malaguena Salerosa ever since I saw it in Kill Bill, it's my jam <3 That would make a very nice Ex program! What I want to become reality so badly is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOqjRI5XykgPiano Concerto by Tschaikowsky! This montage just shows how beautiful it could be, I think the very fist minute is just perfection. Light, sublime, lyrical - this could be a masterpiece.. I also think this would make a wonderful long or short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rsmvq0ZRNR8Romance Larghetto by Copin! It's soft, has lovely highlights and I can perfectly imagine Mao skating to it. I love the moment at 2:55 - Mao could do a wonderful layback spin to that or simply twizzle... Aww, I love building castles in the air

| I feel irritated with many Japanese TV commentators saying that Mao is childish for her age. (They don't know she has various type of musical expression. ) So I recommend "Libertango" for a competition program. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_exd6U1ubY&feature=relatedIt would be interesting if she shows a pure and innocent side for SP, and a passionate side for LP. Mao turns 20 in next September. I think she will enjoy an extreme makeover of "Mao-chan". | |

dlnnyc, you're probably right that the Rachmaninoff I suggested and Maya's Tchaikovsky had been used certain times. But that's exactly the reason why they may be the ideal classic numbers for a skater to appeal his or her best. There are countless classic music, but not all of them are suitable for skating, so if you were to leave out the ones which someone has used before, I think we'd be left with a very narrow choice. I actually like seeing some skaters using the same music. Miki skated to 'Scheherazade' when she won Worlds (or was it an year after that?), then Yuna skated it last season, and this season it was Evan. But they all had different approaches to the music, which I think showed how unique they all are. Even the ways they edit the music was quite different. Btw, like Maya, the reason I kept referring to Yo-Yo Ma versions concerning Moriconne music, was because I think Mao needs not only good music, but good music performed by the best of musicians. I still think that 'Bells...' would've been much better if the music was a good pianist version. Orchestral strings have more power and gives a grand impression, but I think music mainly based on one instrument has more sesitivity. And we all know how Mao is great in expressing sensitive music. One of the reasons why Dai's SP this season was so appealing, is probably because of Coba, the accordion player who did the music. If they used an orchestra version for that SP, it wouldn't have been as half as cool as it is. I don't think it's only the composer who gives emotion to his music. In the end it's the people who play or sing it that gives the soul. Last of all, basically I wouldn't mind which sorts of music Mao will be skating to in the future. If her choreographer thinks it's the best choice, and Mao is up to skating to it, I will accept anything. But hopefully, no mixtures of different music! I hate it when some skaters do that! Someone skated to a medley combining the classic 'Romeo and Juliette' with the film theme, and to me it was like ????? And then there was someone mixing Mozart pieces with Bach! Even a medley of the same composer from different symphonies or film music, I am agaisnt. I'm quite sure Mao wouldn't do anything like that, but I sure hope she wouldn't anyways.

I agree with you, Pochinko. But I had a different opinion this season because I was touched by Johny Wier FP . The program name was "Fallen Angels by various composers." I really love the music "prima e dopo l'amore" which starts in latter part of the FP. If there is a not-long-enough music which Mao really wants to use for LP, it could be a good idea to make a special version, I think. It's hard for me to write my opinions in English. Hope to understand what I want to say.

If you can show me a few skaters who already skated to that wonderful music, I'd be more than glad. I suppose you mean the music choices I suggested? Of course the Piano Concerto #2 by Rachmaninoff has already been used quite a lot. But I wrote that as well
I know that a Japanese skater did skate once to the piano Concerto by Tschaikowsky back in 1980 or 1984, but apart from that I've never seen anybody skate to that music. Same goes for Romance Larghetto. As I already said, please show me some examples I love those pieces and I'm quite astonished that I haven't seen them in competition that much.
Of course Mao could skate to something completely new as well. It was just a suggestion, since she said she wanted to skate to something softer next season I immediately thought of those. Fact is, She does so well with piano - I'd love to see her skate to something similar to 'claire de lune' or 'fantasy for violin and orchestra' again.
aww! sorry guys, all my writing is bold! But I can't turn it off :/ It just doesn't work! sorry
phew i thought i was being yelled at again with all the bold type...lol the tchaikovsky is used alot in jr. skating... mostly men and ive seen a number of pairs skaters use it. i dont know... seems a bit too grand for mao again.. i want her to do lyrical. i wonder how she would do with daphnis & chloe.. very fluid and floaty. YES someting in the vein of clair de lune/fantasy again for sure. all i know is she needs to swept away by the music and to leave the audience in a trance state.

I apologized for that, it would be nice if you read more thoroughly. hm, I honestly hardly watch jr. skating. That is due to the lack of coverage as well as my lack of interest. So, to me it simply doesn't count - senior is just something different and in that area I've hardly seen it. Hm yup, you're right, it's very big and grand, but on the other hand it's not as dark and heavy as Bells, but a very light piece of music which demands a pushing skater. I think with the right choreographer Mao could really skate to this beautifully. But to each his own of course =) @kawaiimao Thanks! It's kind of funny, but I found that out too just yesterday! Yup, it was the 2007/08 season and I went right away watching Joannies short from 2008 worlds! She did so well with that, but all in all I think that music would just make a better long. It needs to unfold and therefore a little more time.
