And more news continue to surface... The Japanese journalist seem to be covering the NHK trophy quite extensively, considering that this is the event where they will be showcasing their very best to the world. 2 current World Champions and 2 current Junior Champions.

Like a Star @ heaven http://sportsnavi.yahoo.co.jp/winter/skate/figure/text/201010210007-spnavi.html

According to the press conference today, Mao says that after Japan Open, she trained with Coach Sato while paying special attention to her jumps. She plans to include two 3As in her FS this season. But she still hasn't decided yet at today's practice, so she isn't sure whether she will actually be doing both at this event. But it would be great if she can, as she has been doing them all along. Shocked

When asked about her goals for NHK Trophy, Mao mentions two:

1) To be able to complete all her jumps

2) To skate with speed from start to finish: at Japan Open, Coach Sato told her that she skated rather slowly in general. So she hopes to skate without losing any speed all throughout the programs at this event.

ETA: Thank you so much for the clip, purplemaze!! cheers

I wonder where she would put the other 3A, if she decides to do two. If she changed the 2A-3T to her 3A combo, then she won't be doing all the triples in her program. The only other alternative is to change one of her 3F combos. Like Poloska, I won't be able to watch this live but I will be really anxious about the results! Drama! Praying for Mao to have a good short tomorrow!

I just went to check in a Japanese figure skating forum and they said that indeed Mao's jumps are not consistant. Well I am sure it will be better than last time anyway. Go MAO! just be yourself and enjoy ! The only thing that fustrate me a little is that the technical caller is that famous Korean lady..

Thanks! At Russian forum we had a terrible time guessing what is the time now . because as far as I understand in the summer the difference is 6 hours and in winter is 5 hours, but we don't know when is the changing the clocks in Japan.

tilitom wrote:

(yoooohoooo!!!! inskate sempai!!!! forum sempais!!! anybody out there who knows a lot about skating, could you please explain "deeper edges"?)

Sure! Smile

The blades that the skaters skate on are not actually flat on the bottom. They have a "groove" on the bottom part that creates two distinct edges, inside and outside:

NHK Trophy 2010 - Page 3 Edges

Now let's say a skater skates forward on one leg. If he/she skates on a "flat" edge (= on both edges), he/she will move forward in a straight line. If he/she skates on a shallow edge, he/she will skate on a slightly curved line. If he/she skates on a "deep" edge, he/she will trace a nice, strongly curved line on the ice.

This is where figure skating takes its name from. Initially tracing figures on the ice used to be a big part of a figure skating competition. Smile

It is quite easy to notice if a skater skates on deep edges. If they do, they will:
1. skate in deep curves rather than moving forward/backward in straight lines and the lined they 'trace' on ice will be more elaborate than those 'left' by a skater who uses shallow edges or skates on flats a lot,
2. lean to left or right, sometimes so much that the sides of their boots almost touch the ice,
3. usually skate faster and generate speed with far less crossovers than skaters with shallow edges.

Skaters with noticeably deep edges:
general skating: Shizuka Arakawa, Virtue/Moir, Jeff Buttle
spirals: Michelle Kwan, Carolina Kostner on a good day
MITF: Jeff Buttle, Takahiko Kozuka
footwork: Daisuke Takahashi
jump landings: Nobunari Oda

And many others, of course, I just mentioned those off the top of my head. Mao's edges were good in her junior days, then got worse as she had a growth spurt, and recently are becoming quite good again, especially on spirals and footwork sequences. They mostly needed improvement during the in-betweens.
For example, compare her spirals in Czardas or early performances of Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra with those in Claire de Lune at GPF /WTT or Masquerade SP. There's a huge difference. Smile

Oh, certainly! Smile I just didn't mention everybody because the list would get quite long. Sweatdrop

And now about the thing that worries me.

There was that recent clip where Mao mentioned that somebody told her that it's possible for her to go back to the ease that she jumped with when she was 15 years old, and so she won't change her jumping style, she will go back to her old one.

I was hoping this was just a figure of speech, and that Mao meant just that she wanted to go back to jumping as easily as she did when she was younger, but I just got more worried by today's news clip:

NHK Trophy 2010 - Page 3 Snapshot024220101021201.th
This is Mao's 3Lz attempt from today's practice clip, and as you can see, Mao went back to her oldest technique. Sad

It will be a miracle if she manages to keep an outside edge with body leaning so far to the inside during the takeoff. What's more, this take-off style is not very conductive to getting high GOEs - the jumps aren't very likely to have great height and cover a big distance.

Yes, Mao's jumps looked nice and solid when she was younger, but that was because her body was smaller. A lot of tiny skaters can jump easily even with awful technique, but it gets difficult when the skater grows taller. Caroline Zhang and many other skaters were also a strong jumper when they were young, but their technique flaws eventually came out to the surface.

Well, I hope it's just a false alarm and I'm worried for nothing. Maybe as Mao mentioned, she has "bad and good days", and today was simply a bad day. Smile'

I really hope coach Sato doesn't encourage Mao to go back to her old technique. I'm afraid she might turn into another Yukari Nakano - a lovely skater, but with flawed jumping technique that nobody cared to fix, and so she got low scores even if she skated clean. Sad

I think Mao can't become a Yukari just because her technique is not as worse as Yukari's. And also for me it's not so clear that she's back to her old technique, now Mao is not in a good condition so we'll see how improvement through out the season will go. For some reason I don't worry at all now.

Isn't that Ms. Chi-hee Rhee? She's not the tech specialist (nor is good ol' Shin Amano) for this event, so I'm staying positive. Laughing

I'm sort of guilty for starting the Patty Chan trend, no? Ah well, what can you do... Hell, no!
Also: Japan doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time for those setting their clocks for the event. Thumbs up!

Going to set up my alarm and take a quick nap now so I can watch pairs and the ladies tonight without falling asleep~ Coffee
