| I see they've changed the start-up since last year. Isn't it a bit unusual though for tha ladies to finish ahead of the men at a Japanese event? | |

| I just hope that mao is going to be in good condition, and that she wins it... so that she this time has a good start to the season... I think that would definitly help mao gain some of her confidence back after JO, because she semed as surprised as every one else when she did her program. I think if mao is mentally ready and on that night she will be stunning to watch.. and I really hope that sato will be able to help her relax so that she has her confidence and determination back, becuase when that is done mao is going to be the absolute best....

| Apart from the Japanese and Americans I'm excited to see how my fellow Swede does. He finished last season on such a strong note. I hope he can continue his streak of skating clean-ish programs. At least you can count on Adrian to bring the voids (he was the one portraying a mental asylum patient last year with the straight-laced jacket and all) | |

| Things about the nhk cup that make me really excited: 1. the new triple axel rule in the ladies' SP will make its debut, 2. starring no less than our dear mao, 3. who will also do a 3lo+3lo, which hasn't been seen on the ice for a really long time 4. a lot of forum members have pointed out that mao's skating has really improved (she's faster with deeper edges, according to dear inskate ) and i want to see how that translates into PCS.) 5. mao's had a tough time debuting her programs and i'm sure that made the fire in her bigger!!! God, please make mao land this historic triple axel, AMEN!!! | |

What do you mean by deeper edges? Are there any recent videos or did they evaluate from her Japan Open competition? Also, what is the new triple axel rule? The one that says that if it is downgraded, there won't be a lot of points taken off?

I also need someone to explain me what is the new rule for 3A...Figure skating rules are difficult to understand for me... Is Mao going to do include 3A in her SP this season ? I haven't heard anything about that yet and I feel she might choose another jump instead. 4 more days to go....I'm very excited!!!!!! Where is our dear Summervie ? he's good in calming people down.

MAO, MAO, MAO Another advantage of being able to do a 3A instead of 2A in SP, other than the base value of the jumps (3A=8.5 vs. 2A=3.3), is that Mao can now include a 3A AND a 3-3 combo in her SP. She was not able to do so under the old rule: Under the old rule, a skater is required to include 3 jumping passes in the Ladies SP: a triple jump from steps, a triple jump combination (triple + something) and a 2A. Since 2A was mandatory (and could not be replaced with a 3A), Mao had to use her triple jump combination pass to do her 3A (3A+2T). But now with the new rule, Mao will be able to do a 3A instead of 2A, and she still has the combination jumping pass to include another kind of triple jump (hopefully a 3-3... 3lo-3lo?) with which she can rack up a lot of points if successful. Another advantage is that Mao would probably have a better chance of getting her 3A ratified (no UR or DG) by not having to do it in combination. Most of her 3A downgrade from last season was when she did it in combination, and the success rate on her solo 3As was quite good Of course this rule applies to everybody, but right now, Mao is the only one who can take advantage of it, because as you know she's the only lady who can land a 3A in competition!

Also, what is the new triple axel rule? The one that says that if it is downgraded, there won't be a lot of points taken off? i honestly don't know how to explain this "deeper edge" comment but i think we can take it literally. i haven't skated day in my life but from what i've read deeper edges make a skater move with more certainty and strength across the ice (?). i think stronger and faster skating=higher marks for the "skating skills" component in the PCS. mao didn't have the highest marks for this last seaon that's why i'm so excited. hmmm... nope i remember inskate making this comment after mao debuted her short program in S/Z's wedding. that's quite a while ago, so i'm sure she's even more good now. and it's not just in this forum, other posts outside have noted how mao's "stroking" has improved, how there seems to be much nuance in her LP despite the errors when she debuted it, etc... it's actually very frustrating for me because i hear a lot of good comments i can't explain to myself yet ( i haven't skated a day in my life!!! which says a lot about just how powerful mao's charisma really is)...but hey, this forum has helped me understand a lot of things. that's why i'm so excited to start my first full season as a mao fan. the wait is agonizing (yoooohoooo!!!! inskate sempai!!!! forum sempais!!! anybody out there who knows a lot about skating, could you please explain "deeper edges"?)

(yoooohoooo!!!! inskate sempai!!!! forum sempais!!! anybody out there who knows a lot about skating, could you please explain "deeper edges"?) Yes I know! Reading comments on YouTube, news, and here in the forum help me understand figure skating even more. I've skated before, but probably twice in my life. Haha! Don't worry I understand you! The biggst improvement I saw in her Japan Open was that I could definitely see her facial expressions and emotions much more clearly than last year's. That's why I'm really excited. I just hope that she skates cleanly this weekend. That's all I'm asking for - skating cleanly will be a huge accomplishment.
