| Where: Goyang City, Korea (Venue - Goyang Ice Arena) Official Website: http://www.gpfgoyang.com/Entries Page (Senior): http://www.isufs.org/events/fsevent00011000.htmEntries Page (Junior): http://www.isufs.org/events/fsevent00011038.htmI love how Asience is one of the sponsors! And Lotte, who also has a commercial deal with Mao. As far as predictions go - I don't think I'll bother making any. All the events are really close as far as the competitors are concerned, especially the men's and ice dance. ETA: It's a good thing I'm done with my finals this week, because the junior skaters are also competing here too alongside the seniors. That's a whole lot of skating to watch. ETA2: Official Website now has the schedule up as well. Competition starts with the Juniors from Dec. 11, then the Seniors from Dec. 12. Gala is on the 14th. :joker: I love the idea of combining the Junior and the Senior level competition, although it must be somewhat intimidating for the Juniors, who will be seeing the Senior skaters and competing in a venue that will most likely be PACKED. I wonder if Coach Yamada will accompany Kanako this time? It'll be very cute to see them cheer on and catch up with Mao, Yukari, and Miki (all from the Aichi area).

| Aww, it would be cute to see an Aichi reunion in Korea! What about Midori Ito (also from Aichi)? Is she going to be commentating? But truthfully, I *really* want to see Mao and Yu-Na go eat Korean barbecue together! Mao and Yu-Na hung out in Tokyo after 2007 Worlds, right? They need to do that again - it would be so cute! And it would remind all the crazy bashing fans that they ARE friends, and highly respectful of each other. I'm guessing Mao and Yu-Na will have a ton of media coverage together; I hope they get a few talk show appearances. I love that Mao is super excited about eating Korean food. If I were Tarasova, I'd be like, "Mao, if you don't land the two triple axels, no bibimbap for you!" | |

| Holy moly! [Picks up jaw from floor.] Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. This exceeds even my big expectations! 1 3A 8.2 2 3A+2T 9.5 3 3F+3T 9.5 4 3S 4.95 5 3F+3Lo 11.55 6 3Lz 6.6 7 2A 3.85 Well, if I total up the jump elements, that's a whopping 54.15. And it looks like Miki Ando isn't planning the 4S, which means that Mao has the clear base value lead (provided she fully rotates everything). I loved that 3F+2Lo+2Lo tano, but I was wondering how she was going to work in the 3T when she replaced the solo one with the 3Lz. Now it all makes sense. Holy cow though, I say again. *EIGHT* triples - if she does them, that's got to be a record, right? And if she gets the two triple axels - another record. And if she hits over 200 points, yet ANOTHER record. You GO MAO!! I have a good feeling about this competition. Everyone (ok, well, a lot of people) thinks that Yu-Na Kim will win, so I think the pressure is all on her. And although she is an incredible machine in competition who doesn't seem to get nervous at all, even she has said that she's a bit nervous to skate in Korea... http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/12/136_35853.htmlIf Mao doesn't win, well, that's what people expected, but if she does, it will be GREAT! So I think Mao can relax, focus on doing her best and show us an amazing skate. GOOOO MAO! You can do it! | |

| Does anyone have news about the "new rule" which give the skater who land successfully all different kinds of triple jump? Did anyone got the bonus point already? | |

I think it was mentioned on FSU that the Japanese Federation (and a few others, IIRC) were interested in having that implemented by next season - so they'll bring it up for discussion in the ISU Congress after '09 Worlds. I'm personally not too excited about that, and I hope it won't pass...I would much rather see a rule change about underrotations first, before anything! - Batsuchan wrote:

Me too. Mao seems to be getting a reputation for "not doing too well outside Japan" but that's completely untrue if you ask me. If anything, she's done well the bigger the competition and more enthusiastic the crowd is, regardless of whether it's held in Japan or not (e.g., GPF '07, Worlds '08 ). And let's not forget 4CC which was held in Korea, and Mao did absolutely amazing there too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though...because I would love to see Mao make it to the record books and skating history yet again! And I noticed that besides Yukari and Mao (who has 8 planned triples), all the other girls have 7 planned. Whew! | |

| This is just insane!!! I really doubt she'll be able to do 8 triples! Some will get downgraded. But WOW - Her courage is beyond amazing. Figure Skating really needs skaters like Mao. I really wish her all the best and a clean skate | |

| Thanks for the photos! I'm always stunned by the amount of photos from the Korean media (happy, but the hype makes me worried a bit ). Mao mumbled "すっごい撮られてる” in one of the news clips | |

Her flight was delayed due to the weather condition. Eek! That's a bit worrisome. But she isn't competing yet, not to mention there is no time difference between Japan and Korea (both GMT +9:00) so I'm not panicking just yet. Mitsuno, I completely agree. It's great that the Korean media is placing a great deal of attention on the GPF, but they seem to be even more obsessed than the Japanese media (as unbelievable as that may sound!). I also pity the skaters a bit, especially Yu-Na with all the home pressure, because it seems like all the skaters that are interviewed by them are asked questions about her (at least a good third of Brian and Johnny's questions asked by the Korean media were about Yu-Na). マスコミのプレッシャーを気にせず頑張ってほしいですよね!

Well, that explains why I could not find any elements practice footage with Mao. I spent like 3 hours browsing through the Korean forum dcinside... as I speak no Korean it was quite a painful process, because I had to open all threads, and there are thousands of them. I found YuNa's runthrough of her SP, though! She seemed to land all the jumps (I write "seemed", because the person who captured the video had sort of shaky hands ), did the back spiral, steps and spins (she fell out of layback going into Biellman). Judging from the photos, Miki improved her spirals. She looks great. I was surprised by one thing - according to the Korean forum, Miki has changed her LP to Saint_saens Symphony no.3 "Organ". Miki's ISU page indeed lists this as Miki's new LP... I wonder if she really changed programs, or is it just a mistake by someone from ISU..? I also noticed in the planned elements list that Mao changed her spins both in SP and LP... In the short program she swapped the flying sit with the layback... And in the LP she plans to do a flying combination change of foot spin in place of the flying sit, which will be moved in the place where flying combination spin (no change of foot)used to be. In fact, I really wanted to see some practice clips in order to see the new FCCoSp! - bib wrote:

| I read that Mao got to spend 20 minutes on the ice, which was apparently half of the allotted time. I did wonder how much time she spent at the airport answering questions. Hopefully not too long! According to Mao and Miki, the ice is a little hard, but Mao said she's pretty much gotten used to it. [So maybe it was a good thing that she didn't practice any jumps or spins. I'd much rather see her get comfortable with the ice first.] I want to see the new spin too! I completely missed the fact that she changed the order/composition of her spins. But I was a little sad that there was no beautiful Biellman spin in Mao's LP. Maybe this means we'll get to see one now? But WOW, Mao, so many changes, so many "level ups" - she's just amazing! Go Mao! - clovera wrote:

| It appears those living in Korea (IP address is from Korea) are able to watch the official practices live thanks to SBS! Ooh, I am SO jealous! Hahaha. Can't wait to see how ko-gu-ma is able to pass her presents to all the senior skaters in the GPF! (she's the one who made the very cute chibi-fied caricatures of the skaters, and joined forces with other Korean fans to have them printed into mugs). Well, I'll be missing most of the competition from the junior folks today, but I should make it in time for the ladies. Good luck Kanako, and all the junior skaters skating today. ETA: Looks like the flip and (f)lutz were safe, and Kanako was downgraded on her 2A. Interesting...you don't usually see a DG for the 2A in a competition.

| 1 Alexe GILLES USA 54.24 1 2 Kanako MURAKAMI JPN 51.04 2 3 Angela MAXWELL USA 48.84 3 4 Becky BERESWILL USA 48.68 4 5 Amanda DOBBS USA 47.48 5 6 Diane SZMIETT CAN 45.64 6 7 Yukiko FUJISAWA JPN 44.48 7 8 Kristine MUSADEMBA USA 43.04 8 Short program for Junior ladies has ended. Hmm...that was a rather disappointing competition unfortunately. Except for Kanako and Alexe, all the girls had some kind of mistake (Musademba and Yukiko had meltdowns ). Kanako was charming, but she was definitely cautious on the flip for the combo and the solo 3 lutz (wrong edge call definitely) so she probably got dinged on at least one jump, hence her score being lower than at JGP Sheffield. This is the Junior ladies though, and the FS usually makes or breaks the competition so its too early to tell. I do hope Angela, Kanako, and Yukiko can skate well in the free two days from now. | |
